Cultural History

Italy has made it's mark on the world in the areas government, architecture, music, art and fashion.  The calendar we use today is the Roman calendar.  The impact Italy has had on the world is unmatched.
Some of the most famous structures in the world are in Italy's borders.  There is the Roman Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Vatican.  Italy also has its share of castles, such as the Valle d'Aosta Fort Bard, the Verrès Castle and the Ussel Castle.Art is in the very fabric of Italy.  Museums found in Florence, Venice and Rome house fabulous pieces of art but amazing pieces can be viewed in churches and public buildings too. The Vatican has incredible art, like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo.
Opera's birthplace was in Italy and many famous operas — including "Aida" and "La Traviata," both by Giuseppe Verdi, and "Pagliacci" by Ruggero Leoncavallo — were written in Italian and are still performed in Italian.
Famous fashion designers have their origins in Italy too.  Fashion houses Armani, Gucci, Benetton, Versace and Prada all call Italy home.

Food & Dining

The one constant in Italian food is fresh and local.  The Italians take a lot of pride in the food they prepare, choosing only the best and freshest ingredients for their dishes.  Each region has its own style of food because they use what their region has to offer.  The coastal towns will be focused more on seafood where those inland will focus more on the cured meats and hearty steaks.  The dining experience in Italy is relaxed and meant to savor and enjoy.  Tables are not turned quickly and you are given plenty of time to enjoy the company at your table.
